Anyone know where I can get one cheap? So far the cheapest I can find it is $40 from LMR

i miss read. i got my SPEEDO gear from steeda.  it was overpriced at like, $14.00... you can get them cheeper...

Odometergears.com has them for $29 but they say if you have a black worm gear you should replace it...is it really that important?

Yes, I believe the worm gear is the drive gear, and that's the one that generally breaks. I could be wrong though, but you do need it.
